TANK is looking into the future


In 2013, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) developed the Transit Network study. The study objectives were to evaluate the existing transit network and identify service improvements, based on existing and future travel patterns, population density, and employment centers.

The Network Study Plan, which was adopted by TANK Board of Directors in January 2014, consists of two major components: (1) fiscally constrained short-term service changes and (2) long-term transit vision. Intended to provide more transit connectivity and increase overall ridership, both components were designed to afford simpler and more direct, transit service to Northern Kentucky.

The service recommendations incorporate several guiding principles that reflect transit best practices.  These principles include the following:

  • Service should be simple
  • Service should operate at regular intervals
  • Routes should operate along a direct path
  • Routes should be symmetrical
  • Routes should serve well defined markets

    Completed/In-Process Recommendations
  • 35X – hourly cross-county service was created to link NKU and the Florence Mall/Hub via I-275 and Dixie Highway/US-42
  • 39X/40X – Demand in the Hebron industrial area has been increasing greatly over the past four years, and TANK is continuing to enhance transit service to these areas
  • Covington Transit Center Renovation – TANK will be updating the CTC with modernized amenities in the Spring/Summer of 2016
  • Enhanced Dixie Corridor – Beginning in April 2016, new, state-of-the-art shelters and signage will be installed at strategically located stops along the Route #1 as a first step toward enhanced bus service

    Short-Term Recommendations
  • Enhanced Transit Corridors – These corridors are characterized by high-frequency, all-day transit service, upgraded passenger amenities, and traffic treatment that provide priority to transit vehicles. Following the completion of the Dixie Highway Amenity project, other corridors slated for enhancement include Madison Ave. in Covington, and Monmouth St./York St. in Newport
  • Bus on Shoulder Pilot Program – Allowing transit to operate on the shoulder during heavy congestion allows for more reliability, and offers an incentive to riders. I-471 has been identified as an ideal location to implement a pilot program for this service.
  • New Park and Rides – The study recommends new park and ride facilities in Edgewood and Taylor Mill in order to further coverage for suburban commuters
  • NKU Hub – Enhanced amenities and service is slated for areas on and surrounding campus to help increase ridership

    Long-Term Recommendations
  • Support high growth areas in Northern Kentucky and address suburb to suburb travel patterns
  • Expand regional service to grow the Florence, NKU, and CVG Hubs
  • Provide “last mile” on-demand service within high-demand suburban neighborhoods and industrial areas
  • Expand park and ride capacity and service to Downtown Cincinnati
