Accessible Buses

All TANK buses are accessible to individuals with disabilities including passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. TANK’s buses are equipped with either “ramps” or “lifts” for wheelchair boarding and “kneeling devices” for general boarding. Ambulatory passengers can also request use of the ramp, lift or kneeling device to make boarding easier. Ample time will be provided to passengers with disabilities to board and disembark in a safe manner.

Bus Stop Announcements

On fixed route service, TANK announces all transfer points, major intersections, destination points and other intervals along a route to permit individuals with visual impairments or other disabilities to be oriented to their location. These announcements may be made electronically or be made by the bus operator over the PA system.

Service Animals

Service animals are permitted to accompany individuals with disabilities on all TANK buses. A service animal is any guide dog or other animal trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Passengers are not required to show proof of service animal certification but may be asked if the service animal is required because of a disability and/or what work the service animal has been trained to perform. A service animal must be under the control of its owner at all times and cannot pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others.

Respirators, Concentrators or Portable Oxygen

Passengers who use a respirator, concentrator or portable oxygen are permitted to ride all TANK buses as long as the device is free of cracks, leaks, dents, gouges or pits. These devices are subject to inspection by the bus operator and must be secured in such a way that the device does not move when the bus is in motion.

Reduced Fares for Persons with Disabilities

Reduced fares are available to individuals with disabilities by obtaining a Reduced Fare Card with a photo identification. TANK offers a reduced fare for senior citizens (age 65 and over) and for people with disabilities (proof of Medicare or SSI assistance is required to receive the discount.) Eligible persons should have a TANK Reduced Fare Photo ID made at the TANK headquarters to show the driver. A Medicare card may also be presented, with valid photo ID. Once qualified, a passenger with a Reduced Fare Card must present the card to the bus operator when boarding for a reduced fare.

RAMP

The ADA states that TANK’s regular service may be the primary means of transportation for everyone, including people with disabilities. Under the ADA, RAMP (Regional Area Mobility Program) serves as a safety net for those individuals who do not have the functional capacity to ride TANK’s regular fixed route service.
